The River Tay Special Area of Conservation (SAC) holds the highest wildlife accolade as part of the Natura 2000 network, a series of sites of international importance for wildlife across the European Union.
The River Tay SAC has been designated as a Natura 2000 site for Atlantic salmon, sea lamprey, river lamprey, river brook lamprey, brook lamprey, clear water lakes and otters. It is also important for the freshwater pearl mussel, which is a protected species.
