Pride Of Lions Surprise Attack a Buffalo But Not Before the Bull Shreds a Lion With Its Horns
When a fellow animal gets gored by a charging buffalo, it doesn’t expect to survive. When a buffalo attacks a lioness, she and the pride of lions she’s with surprisingly makes it out of the situation alive. It was all caught on camera, leaving viewers at home in awe.
It all starts when a lion pride seemingly stalks and surprises a lone buffalo. As soon as the massive animal notices the hungry cats, he retaliates. The buffalo runs in circles, causing the lions to temporarily back off.
The camera gets quite shaky for a moment and in an instant, the pride of lions surrounds the buffalo. As the lions start to jump on the horned animal back to bring it to the ground, the buffalo has had enough.
He scoops up one of the lionesses with his horn and starts flailing his head around to puncture the big cat’s skin. Male buffalos typically use their horns in fights amongst males of their own species to display dominance.
The lionesses continue to try to bring the creature down. One of the top comments on the video reads: “That Buffalo is massive! As powerful and fierce as lions and lionesses are, they need to coordinate and strategize into bringing down such prey.” We couldn’t agree more!
Can a Buffalo Kill a Pride of Lions?
At the Masai Mara Nature Reserve in Kenya, an 11-year-old lioness Siena shockingly lives after the buffalo gores her. The lioness’ leg was nearly severed during the attack, but due to the workers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a facility that specializes in rehabilitating injured elephants, she was able to recover after having surgery.
If the safari vehicle wasn’t there when this happened, it’s likely she would’ve died from her injuries. Cleaning up and patching the wound took the veterinarian and his crew nearly three and a half hours. After the procedure and leaving time, Siena stood up with ease and went back to her cubs.
It’s not uncommon for buffalo to kill lions in the wild. Typically, they work together to take down the ferocious cats. On the other hand, lionesses are incredible hunters and can easily take down animals much larger than them.
It is much less common for a single buffalo to survive an attack from a hungry pack of lions. These wild felines typically look for injured, elderly, or lone prey. While the video doesn’t show who “wins” in the end, one of the top comments mentions that the buffalo didn’t survive.
