Do Bears Eat Fish?
Both black and grizzly bears are carnivores. They are able to digest plants, insects, fish, and animal meat. They spend most of their time wandering around their territories eating vegetation and insects. For most bears, plants makes up around 90 percent of their diet. Having said that, fish and meat are important sources of both protein and fat for bears. Some become very good at catching elk and moose. Others become very good at fishing!
If bears live close to areas where salmon reside then this can become their favorite food.

Bears learn fishing styles from their mother. They may also learn by experimenting themselves. Some stand and wait. They are waiting for the salmon to jump close enough for them to catch them in their mouths. This method is usually used by adult bears, and they will be able to find an ideal fishing spot to practice this technique. Other bears sit near waterfalls and wait for the salmon to swim to them. They can feel the fish moving in the water and pin them to the stream bottom with their large paws. Then, they pick the fish up and bite into it. Plunge pools are often excellent places to spot and catch fish and these are usually occupied by the most dominant bears.
Some brown bears have also been seeing using a dash and grab method. This is where they chase the fish and try to pin it to the bottom of the river with their paws. It requires a lot of energy and is not usually the bear’s preferred method.
A few bears dive under the water looking for fish. It is unusual, but you may even see a bear completely submerged whilst hunting for a snack. Some bears become particular experts at this.
Finally, some bears simply steal fish from other bears! This is why you will sometimes see smaller bears running away from the river with a fish so that they can enjoy it in peace.
