Do Golden Retrievers Make Good Family Pets?
Yes, they do! As you can see from this clip, golden retrievers are excellent with children. As a breed, they are extremely good-natured and easy-going. All they want is to please their owners. Most of them are also very easy to train. They are an intelligent dog and will soon work out what you want them to do. As your children get older, a golden retriever will have energy levels to match your growing family. They like nothing better than to go on long walks and run around in the garden for hours.
Golden retrievers are also a robust dog with a strong and muscular frame. Many of them are 2 feet tall and they can weigh up to 75 pounds. This means that you will have to take care when your children are smaller and should never leave them on supervised. However, it also means that the dog is strong enough to put up with older children charging around!
What Is the Downside of Owning a Golden Retriever?
Golden retrievers need a lot of exercise. They are energetic dogs and will not like to stay in a small apartment all day. If you do not have a lifestyle where you can get them outside every day, you will need to be able to pay somebody else to do it. A restless golden retriever in a small space is a recipe for disaster.
Golden retrievers are gun dogs and were bred to leap into rivers and run through forests. To keep them warm and dry whilst they are doing this, they have a thick double coat. That is a lot of hair to lose when they shed! The biggest shedding seasons are in the spring and fall but they will continue to lose hair throughout the year. Finally, golden retrievers can be prone to some health conditions including hip dysplasia. We hope that Buddy and Nathan are friends for many years!
