In a world filled with quick judgments and first impressions, it’s all too easy to let appearances dictate our choices. However, some of the most profound, beautiful, and valuable experiences and relationships are formed when we take the time to look beyond the surface and give things a chance to reveal their true worth. Take the American bulldog. While they may not be the best-looking dogs, their personalities more than make up for what they lack in aesthetics. Their appearance, characterized by wrinkled faces, dangling jowls, and stocky bodies, becomes endearing once you get to know them. Bulldogs bring a lot of joy and affection to those fortunate enough to have one. It’s no wonder these loyal companions have a day devoted entirely to them. National Bulldog Day 2024: Date

National Bulldogs are Beautiful Day is celebrated on April 21 annually. Sunday, April 21, 2024 is your next opportunity to fete your special bulldog friend. The reason National Bulldogs are Beautiful Day is celebrated on April 21st each year is that on that date in 1886, the American bulldog was officially recognized by dog breeders. April 21 is a splendid day to honor your canine companion. The weather is generally agreeable for a romp in the park or a leisurely walk around the neighborhood.

National Bulldog Day 2024: Origin

Children’s book author Jackie Valent created Bulldogs are Beautiful Day in 2007. After publishing the award-winning story Stinky the Bulldog in 2005, Valent created National Bulldogs are Beautiful Day, not only to recognize our bulldog friends but also to honor all creatures great and small that may look a bit extraordinary. Her vision for the day was to encourage us to accept those among us (bulldogs included) that may look, act, and yes, smell a bit different.

National Bulldog Day 2024: Ways to Celebrate

National Bulldogs are Beautiful Day is the perfect time to pamper your puppy. When April 21 rolls around, be prepared to indulge them in a day of trees and activities that will leave you and your doggo happily exhausted.

  • Prepare a dog-friendly cake or cupcakes using ingredients like peanut butter, applesauce, and carrots. While it’s okay to offer your pup a bite or two of human cake, it’s not advisable to allow them to overindulge in sugary treats.
  • Decorate your home with bulldog-themed decorations. Streamers, banners, and paw prints will set a festive mood. Your dog might not appreciate your efforts, but everyone else will when you:
  • Host a bulldog-themed party. Invite your friends to help you celebrate your canine companion. Ask attendees to bring a bag of dog food that will be donated to a local rescue organization in honor of bulldogs everywhere!
  • Bulldogs love toys. Surprise your bulldog with a new toy or two, or even a new cozy bed. Make sure the toys are safe and suitable for their size and chewing habits.
  • Take your bulldog for a special, longer walk to a favorite park or a new location they haven’t explored before. Bulldogs enjoy being outside and exploring new scents.

More Ideas!

  • If your bulldog gets along with other dogs, invite some doggy friends over for a playdate. This is a great way for your bulldog to socialize and have fun.
  • Bake homemade dog treats for your bulldog using ingredients like sweet potatoes, oats, or meat. There are many dog treat recipes available online.
  • Capture the day with a bulldog-themed photoshoot. Dress your bulldog in a cute outfit or accessories and snap some memories.
  • Bulldogs love attention and affection. Spend some quality time cuddling and petting your bulldog. They’ll appreciate the extra love.
  • In the spirit of giving, consider making a donation to a bulldog rescue organization in your bulldog’s name. This is a thoughtful way to celebrate their special day while helping bulldogs in need.
  • Prioritize your bulldog’s safety and well-being throughout the celebration. Keep an eye on them to ensure they don’t eat anything harmful, and make sure they are comfortable and not overwhelmed by the festivities.

Don’t Limit Yourself!

You needn’t limit your celebration to bulldogs. Jackie Valent intentionally created National Bulldogs are Beautiful Day to celebrate everything and everybody, but especially those who don’t fit comfortably into societal norms. Acknowledge your bulldog, but then take that extra step.

If your bulldog is sociable, consider taking them to visit an elderly or disabled neighbor. Research suggests that interacting with dogs and engaging in human-animal interactions can lead to a range of positive physiological and psychological effects. Studies have shown that spending time with dogs can lead to a decrease in the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in humans. Oxytocin, a hormone that is associated with feelings of positivity is released while petting a dog. Some studies have suggested that petting or being around dogs may help reduce the perception of pain.

Though June is designated as Gay Pride Month, why wait to show your support?

Bring your bulldog along when you offer a meal or a listening ear to a homeless person on the street. Approach them with empathy, respect, and a desire to understand their unique challenges. Remember that listening to them share their experiences is often as important as providing material support. Though June is designated as Gay Pride Month, why wait? Reach out to members of the community. Express your acceptance and support by learning and using inclusive language and respecting chosen names and pronouns. You might mark the day by offering to assist an immigrant or refugee in navigating the local community. Educate yourself about different cultures and histories. You’ll be helping others while broadening your horizons. So, the next time you’re tempted to make a snap judgment? Recall the noble and loyal American bulldog and remember that you might be missing out on something truly remarkable.
