A Coalition of Hyenas Take on Young Lions to Rescue One Of Their Own Cubs
For all that can be said of lions and hyenas in the wild, they both have one very good quality that all humans and other animals can learn from. They will fight for their young, unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Watch these hyenas come to the rescue of their young.
Hyena and Lions Sighting in the Maasai Mara
The next YouTube video posted at the bottom of the blog post takes us to the located in Kenya, Africa. This video was shared by the Maasai Sightings YouTube page. This channel has received more than 615,000 subscribers and just over 100,000 views on this video alone that was posted last week!
“A young male lion coalition found a young hyena cub and proceeded to attack it, the young cub let out a screeching scream that attracted the hyena clan members that were foraging nearby. The young male lion coalition would learn the hard way about the wrath of a hyena clan. The young lions had to retreat as they were completely outnumbered by the hyena clan.”
Hyena Coalition Vs. Lion Pride

At the start of this video, we see a group of young in their pride that have surrounded a young baby hyena. We hear the sounds of this hyena whining, as there is very little that he can do because of how young he is. The young lions come in closer, bullying this young hyena, ready to have a mid-day snack.
If we pause the video at 10 seconds, we see two adult come rushing in. While it would normally be foolish to rush into a pride of lions that are bigger, faster, and stronger, they are doing it to save their young ones.
The young hyena was able to get away finally, and at 33 seconds, we see that a whole group of hyenas have now formed a line against the lion pride. They are all ready to battle, each for their own. For a few minutes, we see them going back and forth with each other. We can see that the lions are unfazed by these hyenas. The hyenas clearly are angry that these lions have attempted to take down their young. They want to fight; however, they know better than to try.
Is a Lion or a Hyena Bigger?
If we look at both animals, they look very impressive in terms of how big they are and how they would handle themselves in a fight. However, one is clearly larger than the other.
The lion (Panthera leo) can weigh anywhere from 264-550 pounds. With the males weighing the larger weight of upwards of 550 pounds.
(Crocuta crocuta) can weigh anywhere from 90-190 pounds. So, as we can see, even the smallest of lions are still bigger than hyenas are.
