Frog Makes a Heroic Escape From a Slithering Black Snake

This is the luckiest escape that you will see all week! A has got itself in a tricky situation. A large black has clamped its jaws onto the frog’s back leg and is refusing to let go. Somehow, the frog manages to clamber up a metal gate. The snake loses its grip and briefly lets go of the frog whilst it adjusts its position. This is all the opportunity that this amphibian needs! The last thing we see is the frog hopping to freedom across the top of the fence and up a wall. Meanwhile, the furious snake throws itself around the ground in frustration. As the clip at the bottom of this page shows, you cannot take your eyes off your meal for a second!

Which Snakes Eat Frogs?

Snakes are opportunistic predators and feed on a wide variety of prey. All of the thousands of snake species on the planet are carnivores and have to hunt other animals to stay alive. There is no such thing as a herbivore snake. Some snakes whilst others will just eat them if they happen to come across them. For example, water snakes are very frequently seeing hunting and eating frogs. Some of the water snakes that have a particular preference for frogs includes the banded water snake, the green water snake, and the diamondback water snake. Other snakes that eat frogs include salt marsh snakes and plainbelly water snakes.

Other snakes that don’t live in water but live near rivers, streams, and marshes also include frogs in their diet. These include the garter snakes, grass snakes, and several python species.

However, it’s likely that any species of snake would eat a frog if they were hungry enough! When it comes to the type of frog on the menu, snakes are not that fussy. They have been seen eating bullfrogs, common frogs, pool frogs, and toads. Snakes will eat both semi aquatic and fully aquatic species of frogs.

How Do Snakes Normally Hunt Frogs?

It’s clear from this clip that trying to chase a frog up a vertical metal railing is not the most successful hunting method for a snake! Snakes are ambush predators. They detect the frogs from their scent and then launch an attack. Some snakes are venomous and inject the frog with powerful venom whilst others constrict them.

Unlike the individual in this clip, most frogs are not that good at defending themselves against snakes. Having said that, some frogs have a which can put off most predators. The problem is that some snakes have developed a resistance to this poison!
