Lions Face Off Against an Entire Pack of Hyenas Who Encircle the Pride
Imagine Africa’s two fiercest predators coming face to face. Now take this and imagine their whole packs and prides facing each other. That’s how intense this video is below!
Pack of Hyena Sighting in the Maasai Mara
The next video posted at the bottom of this blog post takes us to the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, Africa. The Maasai Mara is a large game reserve with animals such as elephants, zebra, rhinos, buffalos, cheetahs, and leopards, to name a few.
This video was filmed and shared by the Javan Guddy YouTube channel. This man is a “professional safari guide, wildlife photographer and videographer,” according to his page. He shares a quick description of what happened in the video below.
“On my evening drive, I encountered these pride of lions killed a warthog and a cackle of hyenas were trying to snatch it from them, enjoy the wild music.”
Pack of Hyenas Vs. Lion Pride
At the start of the video below, we see a collection of seven lions in this pride lounging around. And we see a pack of hyenas slowly emerging from some bushes, like a dramatic scene out of a Hollywood movie or something.
We hear the lions all starting to groan loudly. They are letting this pack of hyenas know that they will not go down without a fight. The hyenas all start to split off. They slowly surround this pack but are not foolish enough to rush in. They know that a whole lion pride would be too difficult to fend off as a whole.
What is the Relationship Between Lions and Hyenas?
Although lions are the kings of the jungle, lions, and hyenas are similar in a lot of ways in the wild animal kingdom. There are similarities from where they live to where they hunt, to what they hunt, and their social behavior.
According to the National Institutes of Health on lions and hyenas, “Lions and spotted hyenas are the dominant large carnivores in most African ecosystems, and these 2 species are one another’s main competitors for resources.”
Lions and hyenas can both be found residing in Africa and in Asia. And they are both carnivorous eaters that eat prey such as wildebeest, monkeys, birds, and zebras.
