用英語講中囯傳統故事——a bird startled by mere twang of a bow-string 驚弓之鳥
Once upon a time, in the State of Wei, there was a famous archer named Geng Lei, who was known for never missing a shot.
One day, he went on an outing with the King of Wei.
Looking up, they saw a flock of wild geese flying overhead.
One of the wild goose was lagging behind, flying slowly and struggling to keep up with the others.
Geng Lei pointed at this wild goose, "Your Majesty, I don’t need an arrow. I just need to draw my bow to bring that bird down."
The King asked in disbelief, "Has your archery skill reached such a miraculous level?"
Geng Lei confidently replied, "I will demonstrate for you."
With that, Geng Lei drew his bow fully. As the bowstring twanged, the wild goose fell from the sky.
The King was astonished, "How did you do that?"
Geng Lei explained, "Because this wild goose was injured."
The King asked, "Oh!How did you know it was injured?"
Geng Lei continued, "I could tell from its flying posture and its cry. It was flying slowly because of the pain from an old wound. Its cry was mournful because it had been separated from its companions for too long. The wound hadn't healed yet, and upon hearing the sound of the bowstring, it desperately tried to fly higher. But by exerting itself, the wound tore open again, causing it to fall."
This story is used to describe those who having been frightened before, become anxious and unsettled at the slightest disturbance.
