用英語講中囯故事——Covering One's Ears While Stealing a Bell 掩耳盜鈴
Covering One's Ears While Stealing a Bell
Originally, it means to cover one's ears to steal someone else's bell. It is also used to describe self-deception. When doing things, one only cares about one's own feelings and ignores objective facts and consequences, which will only bring harm to oneself in the end.
During the Spring and Autumn Period, there was an idle man in Jin State who did not work all day and was unwilling to work. When he saw other people's property, he always wanted to get it.
One day, he took a fancy to a large copper bell hanging outside a family's door.
This copper bell is not only exquisitely made, but also very valuable.
He wanted to steal the copper bell, but he was worried that the bell would alarm the owner during the transportation process.
So he came up with an idea that he thought was smart: since the sound is heard through the ears, if you cover your ears, won't you be able to hear the bell?
So, one night, the man quietly came to the copper bell, covered his ears tightly with his hands, and then tried to pick the bell.
However, he ignored that the transmission of sound is not only through his ears. Even if he covered his ears, the bell was still very loud, and eventually alarmed the owner.
He was caught on the spot, and his foolish behavior became a laughing stock for future generations.
This story tells us: When doing anything, we should not only proceed from our own subjective wishes, but should respect objective facts and laws, otherwise we will only end up in a ridiculous situation.
