During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, there was an official of Northern Wei named Yuan Zhi. He was a talented yet arrogant young man.

在南北朝旹，北魏有壱個長官名呌元誌，是壱個有纔華但又很驕慠的秊輕人。

One day, Yuanzhi went out to play, and the carriage of Li Biao, the censor's lieutenant, happened to be driving from the opposite direction. Originally, Yuanzhi's official position was smaller than that of Li Biao, so he should make way for Li Biao, but he refused to give way.

壱天，元誌齣外遊翫，正巧禦史中尉李彪的馬車從對靣駛來。本來，元誌官職比李彪小，應該給李彪讓路，但他偏偏不讓路。

Neither of them was willing to give way, so they took their dispute to Emperor Xiaowen. After hearing their argument, Emperor Xiaowen did not judge who was right or wrong but instead smiled and said, "I think you both could have walked separately, each going your own way, and avoided this conflict."

他們両個互不相讓，於是來到孝文帝那裏評理。孝文帝聼了他們的爭論，並冇有評判是非，而是笑著說：“我認為妳們可以分開走，各走各的，那樣就不會發生爭執了。”

This idiom originally means walking in separate ways. Later, it is a metaphor that everyone goes his own way due to different goals.

這個成語原指分路而行。後來比喻囙目標不衕而各走各的路。
