用英語講中囯故事——Mark the Boat to Find the Sword 刻舟求劍
Mark the Boat to Find the Sword
It means to find a sword that fell into the river by carving a mark on the boat. It is a metaphor for sticking to dogma and not knowing how to adapt.
During the Warring States Period, a man from Chu State took a boat to cross the river.
As a result, when the boat reached the middle of the river, he accidentally dropped the sword he was carrying into the river.
Due to the fast current, he was unable to retrieve the sword in time, and the people on the boat felt very sorry about this.
However, he did not give up. Instead, he thought quickly and carved a mark on the side of the ship where the sword fell.
He also said to the others on the boat: "This is where my sword fell."
Everyone didn't understand his behavior and stopped asking him questions.
When the boat docked, he immediately went into the water to retrieve the sword according to the mark carved on the boat, but of course he found nothing.
Because the sword would not move with the boat after sinking to the bottom of the water, and the boat had already moved forward for a distance.
This story tells us that things are constantly developing and changing, and we cannot look at problems with a static perspective. When facing problems, we cannot just rely on subjective wishes, but should be flexible and adaptable, and adjust methods and strategies according to actual conditions.
