Xie Lingyun of the Song State in the Southern Dynasties was a renowned ancient poet. He initiated the landscape poetry school in literary history and was famous for his adeptness at depicting famous landscapes and natural scenery.

Emperor Wen of the Song Dynasty's courtesy towards him made him even more arrogant and conceited, looking down on everything. Once, while drinking, he boasted: "Since the Wei and Jin Dynasties, there has been a total of one dan (a unit of capacity, one dan equals ten dou) of literary talent in the world. Among them, Cao Zijian (that is, Cao Zhi) monopolizes eight dou. I get one dou, and the rest of the people in the world share one dou." The idiom "extremely talented" comes from Xie Lingyun's words.
