During the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a minister in the State of Wei named Kong Yu, who was intelligent, studious, and very modest and sincere.
After his death, the ruler of the State of Wei bestowed upon him a posthumous title, called "Wen Gong", and later people respectfully called him Kong Wenzi.
At that time, Confucius had a student named Zigong. He was not convinced that Kong Yu enjoyed such high honor and asked his teacher Confucius, "Kong Yu's knowledge and talent were indeed high, but there were many more outstanding people than him. Why was he given the title of 'Wen Gong'?"
Confucius smiled and replied, "Kong Yu was not only an intelligent and studious person. Whenever he didn't understand something, even if the other person's knowledge and status were inferior to his, he would humbly consult others and not feel ashamed of it at all. This is what is rare about him. So giving him the posthumous title of 'Wen Gong' is not inappropriate." After such an explanation from Confucius, Zigong was finally convinced.
Not consider it disgraceful to consult those who are less learned or of lower status. It describes someone as being modest and eager to learn.
