Cheetah Mother Fearlessly Defends Her Cubs Against a Much Larger Lion
We see amazing footage of a mother cheetah who is willing to literally lay her life down so her cub can get away free from the jaws of a lion.
Lion and Cheetah Sighting in the Masai Mara
The next YouTube video posted at the very end of this blog post takes us to the Masai Mara located in Kenya, Africa. This video was shared by the Maasai Sightings YouTube page. This channel shares footage of animals in the wild. Some of the animals who most seen are lions, leopards, cheetahs, and elephants. The Maasai Sightings team shares a short description of what happened below.
“Cheetah musairia was attacked by a lioness and was able to counter the lioness so as to get her attention away from her cubs in which she succeeded just before the mara rangers intervened and scared the lioness away.”
Lion Vs. Mama Cheetah
At the start of this video posted below, we are taken to the game reserve Masai Mara, or otherwise spelled Maasai Mara in Africa. We see a mother cheetah standing with her cub right beside her. There are various vehicles that are coming through that she regularly sees as they are from the safari tours that come through every day.
However, what is not normal is a male lion that is creeping up on this mother and her cub. But luckily for this cub, his mother is paying attention. We see her at six seconds be alerted to this male lion. And where some might turn and run from danger, she approaches it at full speed. She knows her baby’s life depends on it.
This mother cheetah knows that she is no match for the size of this lion. And the only thing that she can do is try to run circles around this lion. She does this so she can distract him from her cub so he has the time to escape from the jaws of this hungry lion.
Lucky for this mother, the cheetah is the fastest land animal in the entire world! So, while this lion might be able to beat her in strength, there is no way he can beat her if he can’t catch her.
How Much Bigger is a Lion Than a Cheetah?
Lions (Panthera leo) are known as the king of the jungle, and their size definitely comes into play for that title. Male lions can weigh anywhere from 330-570 pounds and reach over eight feet long. This is significantly larger than the cheetah and weighs anywhere from 46-160 pounds!
This female cheetah would have been almost four times smaller than a mature adult male lion. She was smart to use her speed to her advantage. And in the end, it saved her cubs life.
