#1 – Fort Leavenworth

Located in Leavenworth County, Fort Leavenworth is definitely the most haunted place in Kansas. First established in 1827, the fort was the first settlement in Kansas. Built to protect fur trading and commerce in the developing area, Fort Leavenworth housed troops and artillery as well as serving as a supply and distribution center for other outposts. As the surrounding area continued to draw more settlers and develop, Fort Leavenworth became the largest base for operations on the frontier. More buildings were constructed on the site to expand the rapidly growing base, and eventually become home to spine-chilling terrors. Nowadays, the Fort Leavenworth site is believed to be haunted by many people. Visitors report hearing strange sounds, seeing faces, and spotting strange figures roaming the buildings. The second most haunted place in Kansas is Molly’s Hollow, located in the town of Atchison. In fact, Atchison is often called the most haunted town in all of Kansas. Molly’s Hollow refers to a section of forest within Jackson Park in the town. Although there are many different iterations of the story, legend has it that long ago a young woman named Molly was killed in the area. Since then, Molly’s ghost has supposedly haunted the area. Visitors report seeing her ghost hanging from a tree, hearing her screams, and feeling an overwhelming sense of dread and despair when in the area. In addition to the terrifying tale, there have been three reported deaths in Molly’s Hollow since the incident occurred long ago.

#3 – Ellis Railroad Museum

Ellis, Kansas is home to the third most haunted place in the entire state. While this railroad museum is still open to the public today, it is also known for its supernatural ties. In 1957, a man named Earl Perkins was put in a jail cell in the basement of what is now the Ellis Railroad Museum. That night, his cell flooded with over eight feet of water, drowning Perkins in the process. To this day, individuals still report hearing strange, unsettling noises coming from the basement. In addition to this, some have even reported seeing a mysterious figure navigating the rooms of the museum at night.

#4 – Hutchison Library

Although libraries are usually places of peace and quiet, this specific establishment is quite the opposite. Hutchison Library, located in Hutchison, Kansas, is the fourth most haunted place in the state. By day, this library is a normal place to check out books and attend educational events, however, things become much more sinister after hours. The ghost of Ida Day, a previous librarian, is said to still haunt the Hutchison Library. Visitors and employees have reported seeing Day roaming the basement of the library, as well as seeing a shadowy figure shuffling through books. Aside from this, people have reported hearing mysterious footsteps and feeling random cold chills. In one instance, a librarian even reported having a conversation with a strange woman who then vanished.

By 1934, however, the entirety of the Pitzer family perished except for one. Shortly after the passing of her family, Violet Pitzer relinquished the estate to a local historical society and moved away. Although the family no longer owned the home, their spirits are still said to occupy the grounds. People have reported seeing strange glowing lights on the property, even when the electricity was turned off. Inside the home, there have been sightings of all five family members patrolling rooms and playing as if they were still alive.

According to local stories and hearsay, the site is often used by dark groups for rituals. Aside from this, the cemetery was apparently an execution site for witches during the 19th century. St. Jacob’s Well is located in Ashland, Kansas, and is the seventh most haunted place in the state. One interesting feature of this particular well is that even in times of extreme drought, it has never run dry. While there is most likely a reasonable explanation for this, many individuals attribute the strength of the well to supernatural properties. However, there have been some strange occurrences involving the well. One story dates all the way back to 1924 when a man saw the figures of a horse and its rider at the well. As the man approached, he heard a loud screeching sound, and the figures vanished. Other tales indicate that there are many spirits that live at the bottom of the well, causing the site to be haunted.

#8 – Beaumont Hotel

Because hotels house so many interesting guests over the years, they are common places where tales of hauntings occur. The Beaumont Hotel in Butler County, Kansas is a great example of this. Although the hotel is still open to guests today, there are strange tales of haunting that make it an iconic place for ghost hunters and supernatural fanatics. Legend has it that a cowboy by the name of Zeke was once killed by the innkeeper of the hotel after it was built in 1879. Visitors allegedly still see Zeke’s ghost at the top of the stairs, as well as hearing banging sounds and the sounds of cowboy spurs in the halls.
