The Old English Sheepdog likely originated in the 1800s in western England. In those days, there was a tax on dogs, and working dogs like the OES had their tails docked to avoid the tax. Even after the tax was lifted, the practice of tail docking continued, giving the OES its nickname, “bobtail.”
