The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) of the genus Alligator are large reptiles. Before we go into how many alligators there are in the great state of Mississippi, let’s take a look at who these reptiles are in size, what they eat, and finally, their population status.

Alligators are brown, grey, yellow, black, and green in appearance. They can range in a variety of sizes from 400800 pounds (181-363 kilograms) and reach from 8-15 feet (2.5-4.5 meters) in length. Of course, this is just the estimated size of those who have been seen. As we saw from the video posted at the bottom, this alligator was about half this size.

What Do Alligators Eat?

Alligators are carnivores, which means they will eat meat. They are known to eat prey such as fish, snakes, turtles, small mammals, and birds. And mature alligators are known to eat bigger animals, such as deer and black bears.

It is estimated that there are a whopping four million alligators in the United States. The two states with the highest populations are Louisiana and Florida. According to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, “We recently estimated that there are 32,000-38,000 alligators and about 408,000 acres of alligator habitat in Mississippi.”
