Humpback Whale Sighting in California

The next YouTube video posted at the top of this news post takes us all the way to California. Where on Thursday, October 19, 2023, a Dana Point Whale Watching tour boat in California caught amazing footage of two humpback whales.

This tour had a few stops along the way. And this amazing stop showed something so magical they had to stop for it. This video was shared by the Dana Point Whale Watching YouTube channel. It was reported they had an aerial drone above, which gave amazing footage of these beautiful animals and their performance of a lifetime. They share their description of what happened in the video below.

“On our next trip, we found likely the same pair of humpbacks who became curious about the Ocean Adventures and “mugged us” for over 30 minutes. As they swam around and under our vessel they rolled, fluked, spy hopped including a double spy hop off the stern. Watching them glide through the glassy water seeming to look at us as we watched them was magical.”

At the start of this video, we see two incredible humpback whales that are close to this tour boat. We see them both majestically coming in and out of the water. They are blowing water and spreading their fins out in an angelic display. They stay close to this tour boat, almost as if they want to be seen.

“Watching them glide through the glassy water seeming to look at us as we watched them was magical,” said a spokesperson for Dana Point Whale Watching.

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) of the family Balaenopteridae are massive whales that live throughout the world’s major oceans, according to the NOAA Fisheries. There are estimated to be about 135,000 left in their population. Even though this number may not seem as much as other animals, they are still being studied and followed. And as of 2023, they are not considered to be in endangered.

Big Surf California reported that a study by the Cascadia Research Collective points to there being about 800 of these humpback whales in California. With so few in this state, it’s no wonder these tourists thought this sighting was majestic!
