Wild Buck Bravely Fights Off Painted Wolves Only to Be Bullied by a Hippo and Chomped by a Crocodile
The next YouTube video posted at the bottom of this blog post takes us to the Kruger National Park located in South Africa. This video was shared by the Latest Sightings YouTube channel. They share a short description of this encounter below.
“The nyala bull got chased by the wild dogs and retreated to the water, deciding that this was the safest spot to avoid becoming a meal. However, whilst trying to defend itself from the dogs, a hippo attacked it from behind to defend its territory. Luckily for the nyala, it managed to scare the huge hippo off with its pointy horns, but just as the battle with the hippo was won, this helpless nyala had a crocodile to contend with! What a difficult day to be this nyala!”
Buck Fight Against Africa

At the start of this video posted below, we see two painted wolves (or more commonly referred to as African wild dogs). They are head to head with a buck, called a nyala. We see that they strive to get this much desired meal. However, they know it’s just a little bit too big for the two of them to take down.
And then, like something out of a horror movie, all of a sudden, at 10 seconds, a massive hippopotamus just pops up out of nowhere behind this nyala. This buck does its best to stake out which threat is worse. He determines the hippo is and turns his attention behind him, and the hippo strikes out!
The hippo lunges and the nyala fights back. And so the hippo quickly rushes off. He’s not interested in this fight. The painted wolves stay at the forefront of this shoreline, determined to get him. Their friends all soon join in.
As if this fight wasn’t enough between the painted wolves and the hippos, suddenly, a crocodile joins in and ends this fight. He takes this nyala down and is now the sole eater of this meal.
What Hunts the Nyala?
While not a very well known animal, this nyala (Tragelaphus angasii) is a large mammal that any predator would consider themselves lucky to take down and enjoy. The nyala is central to Africa. It is estimated there are about 30,000 in Africa alone. Their conservation status is of the least concern.
The predators who hunt them down regularly are animals such as lions, leopards, and African wild dogs.
