Moose are large herbivores who are found throughout northern North America. You will spot them throughout Alaska as well as in Canada and other areas of the northeastern United States. They can be found as far south as the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. In terms of habitat, moose like to live in forested areas where there is snow cover in winter. They also have a preference for moist conditions so you will find them where there are lakes and swamps. Moose only live in colder regions because they find it hard to cool down! They have large bodies and they cannot sweat. Also, they produce a lot of heat by the fermentation within their gut. In the summer, you will see them heading for shady areas especially near ponds and streams.
Are Moose Scared of Humans and Dogs?
It is not unusual to find moose in urban and suburban areas. They are not normally aggressive but they can become dangerous. Some of them do not fear people. Others will flee when they feel threatened. However, there is a chance that they can become aggressive in some circumstances. Some adults can become aggressive if they are harassed by dogs or traffic. They are also more likely to be dangerous if they are tired, hungry or under some other form of stress.
This baby was fascinated by the dog in the clip. However, it was the other side of the fence and therefore was not a threat. Many adult moose view dogs as a potential predator and they can aggressively attack dogs and the humans that are with them at the time! It is always best to keep three school bus lengths away from an adult moose and to keep dogs on a leash and under control when they are nearby. Also bear in mind that baby moose are likely to have a Mom nearby!
