Watch 3 Fisherman Stroll Right Past Two Massive Bears… Fearless or Foolish?

Published By:anonymous Posted On:08/10/2023

If bears know how to do one thing, it’s chilling out. In the video below, we see a serene setting along a riverside, with two brown bears minding their own business. In fact, they’re so chill, they don’t give a second thought to a group of fishermen walking right between them. The group eyes the animals for a moment, but nobody involved seems to mind a thing. It’s a brief scene, but a rather humorous one!

Interestingly enough, the bears we see here are part of a tracking program and have names. Respectively, the big boy and girl we see in the below clip are named 480 “Otis” and 901, and are local favorites. The area they’re usually observed in is the Katmai National Park and Preserve, located in Alaska, where this footage was taken. Otis is famous for being big – he’s won a few Fat Bear awards for several years running! His pal 901 also has her fair share of wins for the title as well. They both must know where all the good snacks are hidden!

With that understood, let’s take a peek into the amazing brown bear and discover more about their intriguing behaviors.

What is the Brown Bear’s Strongest Sense?

You could say the nose knows! Brown bears actually have the sharpest sense of smell in the entire animal kingdom. This mighty claim is thanks to the organs responsible for processing smell, their olfactory bulbs, being about five times bigger than a human’s. That said, it’s no surprise that these animals have a sniffer that’s 100 times as powerful as even the most talented canine. Although bomb-sniffing bears aren’t quite a thing yet, it explains why these critters root around with an insatiable curiosity. Much to campers’ dismay, they can detect scents from up to 20 miles away!

In addition to having this complex of a sense of smell, they also exhibit an advanced language of their own. These forest giants use growls, barks, clicks, and more to express a wide variety of moods and messages.

How Many Kinds Of Brown Bear Exist?

The name “brown bear” covers many separate but related species, including the Kodiak and the grizzly. The grizzly inhabits the northwestern portion of North America, while the Kodiak is only found in a specific region of Alaska. There are, of course, many other kinds of brown bears found throughout the world.
