The Top 9 Reasons Arizona Has The Best Lakes in the Country

Published By:anonymous Posted On:08/10/2023

You may not see Arizona as a prime spot for swimming. However, Arizona has some of the best lakes in the country. If you’re looking for a unique spot to vacation, you don’t have to look much further than this vivid state.

There are several reasons why Arizona’s lakes are so great. Of course, a lot of this is a matter of personal opinion. However, after you read these points, I think you’ll agree with me.

1. Scenic Beauty

While it is mostly a desert, the shining lakes provide a vast contrast.

Arizona has some of the most unique beauty of any state. The sculpted rock formations and unique wildlife are something to behold, especially when they’re put up against shining lakes. You can see trees and greenery in many different states, but the red and yellow rocks of Arizona are something different.

Even if you don’t plan on swimming, picnicking next to one of these lakes after a day of exploring canyons is something that’s hard to beat. Everyone should visit Arizona at least once if only to take in the landscape.

2. Mild Climate

The climate in this state is often mild, making it pretty enjoyable to spend there all year round.

Despite being mostly a desert, Arizona has a pretty mild climate. The summers are warm, and the temperature can get pretty high, especially in the middle of a heat wave. However, it’s a dry heat, so it doesn’t feel quite as hot as it may otherwise. Plus, in dry heat, a dip in the water can do a lot to cool you off.

In humid states, like in the Deep South, sometimes the last thing you want to do on a hot, humid day is swim. In Arizona, you don’t run into that problem.

Even in the winter, the temperature of Arizona stays relatively mild. You can continue hiking in the winter, though you probably won’t be able to enjoy water activities. The year-round appeal makes it possible to vacation in Arizona at any time of the year.

3. Variety of Activities

Kayaking is pretty common in Arizona, and there are many lakes that are very suitable for these water sports.

Let’s be honest. There are only so many lakes in Arizona. Therefore, each lake tends to be jam-packed with activities. Boating enthusiasts can take advantage of serene cruises, water skiing, or jet skiing, while anglers can try their luck at catching a variety of fish species, including bass and trout.

Even if you want a more serene activity, there are plenty of trails and scenic overlooks around the lakes of Arizona. You can lounge the day away or just visit a swim beach. Either way, you have a lot of options.

Because there are so many things to do, you can often make the whole family happy, even if some members have very opposing views of what counts as fun. It’s also very hard to get bored.

4. Water Sports

Despite what you may think, there are actually tons of opportunities to do water sports in Arizona. The calm waters are a great place for novices to learn how to paddle board or jet ski. There are often plenty of places to rent boats and other water sporting equipment, as well.

Occasionally, the lakes even offer water sports competitions, which you can take part in or watch. While the state isn’t as popular for water activities as some other areas, this also means that the lakes won’t be as crowded.

5. Fishing Opportunities

This state has plenty of fishing opportunities despite being mostly a desert.

Arizona has a surprising number of quality fishing opportunities. There are many kinds of fish common in this state, though the specifics can vary from lake to lake. Often, these lakes provide a diverse number of fish habitats, which also support a diverse number of fish species.

Largemouth bass, catfish, sunfish, and trout are all common in lakes around Arizona. Many lakes have fishing piers that you can use, but you can also cast from the shore or a boat.

Many lakes host fishing competitions, allowing you to compete if you’d like. You can also watch others compete and find a community at these events.

6. Family-Friendly

There are often tons of different family-friendly activities on Arizona’s lakes. Of course, some are more popular than others.

These lakes are vacation hotspots for the region, so they tend to be very family-friendly. Playgrounds and swimming areas are very common around lakes, allowing families of all ages to have fun. You’ll also find many picnic areas, allowing you to potentially spend the whole day at the lake if you want to.

Occasionally, lakes may offer lifeguard services in swim areas during peak season. However, in most cases, it is swimming at your own risk. Keep this in mind when bringing smaller children.

You’ll also find many camping facilities around the lake. These allow you to make a whole vacation of visiting the lake and immersing yourself in nature. These campgrounds are typically built with families in mind.

7. Wildlife and Birdwatching

Arizona is home to many unique and interesting species. Lots of wildlife in the state converge on the lakes, which provide a source of water and food for many animals. Often, being next to a lake is a much better survival strategy than being out in the middle of a desert.

Birdwatchers can find tons of different species frequenting these lakes, including waterfowl, eagles, herons, and even migratory birds. You’ll find tons of species moving through this state while migrating, and they often stop at the lakes to “refuel.”

Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy observing tons of native wildlife, including mule deer, bobcats, and similar species. Many of these animals are more secretive, so they can be hard to spot. However, if you want to see one, stacking out a quiet spot on a lake is often a good choice.

8. Night Sky Views

As you can guess, the lack of trees and artificial light makes it beautiful at night.

You really can’t beat the night sky of Arizona. The state is known for having minimal amounts of light pollution, which means that you can see more stars and perhaps even the Milky Way. If you can find a spot away from civilization, the views can be breathtaking.

After a day of activities, there are few things better than lounging around a lake and watching the stars. Lakeside campgrounds are a great way to enjoy this little wonder of Arizona, especially if you have young children.

Whether you’re an experienced astronomer or just have an eye for beauty, these night sky views are impossible to best.

9. Variety of Lakes

Arizona may be dry, but the state is actually home to several lakes. Some of these are larger and more developed, with lots of activities and even campgrounds to take advantage of. Others are smaller and less developed. These spots may be great for viewing wildlife or enjoying a serene walk, but you probably don’t want to plan on spending days with your family there.

Thanks to the variety of lakes available, you can find something for just about everyone. Pick which lake fits your best, or take a short trip to several.
