When people think of Kansas, they typically think of the larger cities, like the state capital Topeka or its largest city of Wichita. However, Kansas is home to lots of small towns. In fact, it only has five cities with more than 100,000 people. There are 627 incorporated cities in the state, but the smallest city in Kansas has a population so small that its residents can fit in a large SUV.
Kansas is in the Midwestern United States. It is a landlocked state bordered by Nebraska to the north; Missouri to the east; Oklahoma to the south; and Colorado to the west. Kansas is the 35th most populous state in the United States with a population of almost 3 million people.
The Smallest City in Kansas Has 9 Residents
According to the U.S. Census, the smallest city in Kansas is Waldron with nine residents. The entire population is so small that residents can fit in a large SUV. Waldron is not alone in this number. Kansas is home to lots of small cities.
Waldron is in Harper County, Kansas. It was founded around 1900. The first post office was established in 1902. The rail lines of the Choctaw Northern Railroad and the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway crossed in this city. Both lines have been abandoned.
According to the 2010 U.S. Census, there were six households in the city, with a median age of 82.4 years. Its population has continued to decline since its inception.
Former Smallest City in Kansas Had 8 Residents
Frederick is a city located in Rice County, Kansas. In 2020, Frederick has a population of 8. However, in 2017, voters choose to dissolve the city.
Frederick was founded in 1878. It never fully recovered from a tornado in 1914 and a fire in 1934. It is also surrounded by farmland and has no jobs to offer its residents.
State of Kansas
Kansas entered the Union as a free state in 1861. By 1890, most of the land was occupied, and it became known for its agriculture. For a long time, Kansas was seen as the United States’ agricultural heartland. Nine-tenths of the land area is used for agricultural purposes. This might explain its small cities and an entire population of less than 3 million.
Kansas is also known as the Sunflower State. It has more than 20 wildflower trails in rural and urban areas. A popular destination to see wildflowers is the Maxwell Wildlife Refuge.
The state also has one of the most miles of river than any other state in the Great Plains. It is also home to the world’s largest contiguous tall grass prairie.
In addition, Kansas is the largest producer of wheat in the United States. It is also known for its barbecue.
