Watch Dozens of Hyenas Flee From Their Lunch the Moment a Beastly Lion Rolls Up

How far does respect go? Well, when it comes to the king of the jungle, animals far and wide would willingly give up quite a lot. Let’s see just how big of a prize these hyenas will give up for this lion.
Hyenas and Lion Sighting in Africa
The video posted at the top of this blog post takes us to Africa. The Maasai Sightings YouTube page shared this video just a week ago. They share their description of the relationship between hyenas and lions below.
“Hyenas and male lions have a complex relationship. While hyenas are known to scavenge from lion kills, they can also be intimidated by male lions. Male lions are generally larger and more powerful than hyenas, and they can defend their kills and territory against hyenas. However, the outcome of interactions between hyenas and male lions can vary depending on factors such as the number of hyenas and the condition of the lion.”
Hyenas Fleeing from King of the Jungle
At the start of the video, we see a group of easily over a dozen hyenas that are feasting on a massive elephant. It is most likely that this elephant died of natural causes and the hyenas are there to feed on its carcass. The San Diego Zoo adds that hyenas “give new meaning to the phrase “lick the platter clean.” They eat practically every part of their prey, including skin, hooves, bone, and teeth.”
As they are licking this platter clean, they notice something just up ahead. The king of the jungle is coming by and walks straight up to their kill. The hyenas closest to this elephant disperse as quickly as possible. Regardless of how they found it, this kill is now the king’s.
Will Lions be Extinct by 2050?
Nothing is more heartbreaking than hearing about the possible extinction of animals. Lions (Panthera leo) of the genus Panthera are located in Africa and Asia. There are estimated to be between 23,000-39,000 that are left in their population.
At this going rate, lions are in a vulnerable conservation status. According to the African Wildlife Foundation, “At the current rate, lions could go extinct by 2050.” This population decline is largely due to habitat loss and poaching.
We need to relish the videos like the ones we see above, to see the power this king of the jungle holds over the animals in the wild.
