These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Source:AZ Animals Time:January 1, 2024

The diet you give your cat has to have the right balance to support their muscles, teeth, bones, and every other part of their body. A good diet keeps them healthy, and it needs to include the right protein to support heart and teeth health too. While sneaking food under the table at dinnertime might be tempting, they need a nutritious diet without any of the spices that you love. Whether you adopt a cat from a rescue, a shelter, or a breeder, certain foods are good and bad for them. Here are the best foods (and worst foods) for your feline friend.

BEST FOOD: Cantaloupes And Strawberries

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Even though these fruits are healthy, only give them to your cat in moderation.

Melons are a great source of vitamins A and C. Unlike many of the best human foods for their diet, cantaloupe and strawberries don’t need to be cooked first. You can even let your cat try small bites of honeydew in moderation.

WORST FOOD: Grapes Or Raisins

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Both dogs and cats are incapable of propertly digesting grapes, causing them to be toxic to the digestive system.

©Dream79/Shutterstock.com

When cats eat grapes or raisins, they aren’t able to digest the tannins and other compounds in them. Without being able to digest it, these fruits have a toxic effect on the body, causing severe or fatal kidney damage in the wrong quantities.

BEST FOOD: Peas

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Because of their carbohydrates, obese cats should limit their intake of peas.

Peas provide your cat with healthy proteins and carbohydrates in moderation. They shouldn’t be given in abundance. Most veterinarians recommend that peas comprise less than 10% of the cat’s daily food, especially if their weight needs monitoring.

WORST FOOD: Milk And Other Dairy Products

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Like dogs, cats are lactose intolerant.

If your cat eats too much dairy, they may vomit or have runny stools. Even if you purchase canned food with cheese, make sure to monitor your cat for any adverse reaction to the meal.

BEST FOOD: Spinach

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Spinach is an excellent source of vitamin K.

©nesavinov/Shutterstock.com

Many cats enjoy spinach in their diet, though they only need it in small amounts. Along with vitamin K, this leafy green vegetable provides them with a natural source of folate, potassium, calcium, and essential vitamins for their health.

WORST FOOD: Onions And Garlic

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Both onions and garlic contain N-propyl disulfide, which can cause anemia.

©Miss Pop/Shutterstock.com

The digestive system of a cat is not meant to have garlic or onions. When cats consume it, the natural enzymes can lead to hemolysis, which progresses to anemia.

BEST FOOD: Cooked Lean Meats

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Giving your cat cooked lean meat supports their muscles, heart, and vision.

©Colin Hui/Shutterstock.com

Lean cuts of beef, chicken, and turkey are the best sources of healthy protein. However, you need to remove any bones to avoid splintering in the digestive tract. Some cats even enjoy small bites of deli meat, as long as it hasn’t been seasoned.

WORST FOOD: Raw Or Undercooked Meats

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Raw food is not meant for the diets of domestic cats.

©Mironov Vladimir/Shutterstock.com

While some people adjust their cats to a raw food diet like they would consume in the wild, avoiding raw meat completely is much safer for inexperienced owners or cats with sensitive stomachs. Without proper preparation, these meats can contain toxic bacteria.

BEST FOOD: Cooked Eggs

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Eggs are a wonderful source of nutrition for cats.

©iStock.com/ito:krblokhin

Eggs offer linoleic acid, B vitamins, and protein that nourish the skin and coat. The way you prepare the eggs for your cat doesn’t matter, as long as the eggs are cooked thoroughly.

WORST FOOD: Raw Eggs

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

The ASPCA states that raw eggs are one of the most important sources of protein to avoid giving cats.

©ANEK SANGKAMANEE/Shutterstock.com

Salmonella is a common concern when using raw eggs, but they also contain an enzyme that prevents cats from absorbing biotin. Biotin is necessary for your cat’s body because it supports their metabolism.

BEST FOOD: Cooked Fish

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Cooked fish, like chicken and beef, is a great source of nutrients for the carnivorous needs of a cat.

©Maria_Usp/Shutterstock.com

One of the best foods you can give your cat is cooked fish. Most cats are big fans of salmon and other fish, but not all cooked fish are safe. Avoid giving your cat too much canned tuna because it may be high in mercury.

WORST FOOD: Raw Fish

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

While cats enjoy cooked fish, letting them eat raw fish is a digestive disaster.

Raw fish can cause food poisoning in your cat. They ruin your cat’s thiamine levels, which can lead to neurological issues or even a coma.

BEST FOOD: Cooked Pumpkin

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

The fiber in pureed pumpkin helps cats clear hairballs from their throat.

©Sinti Lu/Shutterstock.com

Once cooked and pureed, pumpkin is an excellent source of nutrition for cats. It provides them with vitamin A, beta-carotene, and other necessary vitamins. Most experts limit pumpkin consumption to no more than a teaspoon twice a day, served with a regular meal.

WORST FOOD: Raw Potatoes

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Raw potatoes are highly toxic for cats.

©Val_R/Shutterstock.com

Potatoes, whether they are cooked or raw, should not be consumed by your cat. They naturally contain solanine, which is toxic to cats. Even if they consume a peel that you left in the flood, get medical attention as soon as possible.

BEST FOOD: Cooked Broccoli And Green Beans

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Like pumpkin, pureed green beans and broccoli provide cats with healthy fiber for digestion.

©Nadiia Diachenko/Shutterstock.com

Whether together or separately, both broccoli and green beans are good for the cat’s digestive system. They offer calcium and iron in high amounts, but you need to cook and puree them first.

WORST FOOD: Tomatoes

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Tomatoes, like potatoes, have a high amount of solanine.

©eugenegurkov/Shutterstock.com

These fruits are just as toxic as potatoes because they share the same compound that causes severe damage to the cat’s digestive system. In fact, even eating the leaves or stems of a tomato is enough to warrant a vet visit.

BEST FOOD: Oatmeal

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Oatmeal isn’t a necessity for a cat’s diet, but it balances high protein.

©Oksana Mizina/Shutterstock.com

If you want to prepare a nourishing breakfast, make your cat a bowl of oatmeal too. It has tons of protein, fiber, and fat, and all of this nourishment is good for your cat. It should only be given occasionally as less than 10% of their diet, like any human food.

WORST FOOD: Yeast-Based Dough

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Yeast-based dough is dangerous to your cat’s health.

©Zapylaiev Kostiantyn/Shutterstock.com

The ASPCA states that no uncooked bread dough with yeast should be a part of your cat’s diet. It has none of the essential nutrients that your cat needs, but yeast produces ethanol which is dangerous for cats.

BEST FOOD: Watermelon

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Watermelon offers a sweet treat for cats.

©Africa Studio/Shutterstock.com

Like cantaloupe, watermelon is safe to add to your cat’s diet. It has a lot of important vitamins for their brain and body, but the sugary fruit should only be given in small amounts.

WORST FOOD: Chocolate And Coffee

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Chocolate and coffee both contain caffeine, which is dangerous for cats.

©audibanciu/Shutterstock.com

Two of the worst human foods that your cat might eat are chocolate or coffee. Since both contain caffeine, they put your cat at risk of muscle tremors, rapid breathing, heart issues, and restlessness.

BEST FOOD: High-Quality Cat Food

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

When you select the best foods for your cat, don’t forget to find high-quality cat food.

©kholywood/Shutterstock.com

Even though it seems obvious, many people don’t give their cat the food that they need. Human foods should never exceed 10% of their daily diet, so find a cat food brand you trust.

WORST FOOD: Dog Food

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Dog food offers a different balance of macronutrients that won’t meet a cat’s needs.

©Zontica/Shutterstock.com

If you are tempted to save some money and share food between your cats and dogs, don’t. Dog food lacks the right protein, and it doesn’t include the vitamins and minerals cats need. It isn’t toxic, but it isn’t healthy for them either.

BEST FOOD: Apples And Bananas

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Apples and bananas are high in calories, so only provide them in moderation.

©Jana Ranincova/Shutterstock.com

These fruits are some of the most popular to give domesticated pets. They are high in vitamins A and C, which cats need for immunity. Even the outside of this fruit contains tons of phytonutrients for your feline.

WORST FOOD: Coconuts

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

The flesh and milk of coconuts have too much fat for cats.

©Inna Dodor/Shutterstock.com

When it comes to coconuts, keep them away. With all of the fat that coconuts contain, you put your cat at risk for hyperlipidemia or pancreatitis. It also makes them obese.

BEST FOOD: Blueberries

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Blueberries are rich in healthy antioxidants, but should only be consumed in moderation.

©Subbotina Anna/Shutterstock.com

With the rich antioxidants and polyphenols in blueberries, many pet owners add these berries to their cats’ diet. They can improve immunity and support joints in older cats.

WORST FOOD: Macademia Nuts And Seeds

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

If your cat digests macadamia nuts, they might become lethargic.

©Hermadi Sihamto/Shutterstock.com

Consuming macadamia nuts is quite dangerous for your cat, causing lethargy, tremors, and hyperthermia without warning. These dangers extend to other nuts as well, like walnuts.

BEST FOOD: Fish Oil Supplement

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Some companies produce fish oil supplements that are specifically meant for cats.

©R_Szatkowski/Shutterstock.com

Fish oil can reduce the symptoms that cats experience with organ disease, arthritis, and skin allergies. It contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are both safe and necessary for your cat’s health

WORST FOOD: Coffee And Alcohol

These Are the Worst (And Best) Food for Cats

Xylitol and alcohol are toxic to the digestive system of cats.

©5PH/Shutterstock.com

Drinking alcohol from your glass or getting into your sugar-free gums are all dangerous to cats. Since the digestive system of a cat is not meant for either of these substances, it can lead to rapid liver failure.
