Kansas City, Missouri
When you think “Kansas City,” where are you thinking of? With a population of 509,782 residents, this Missouri city is the largest in both population size and area in the whole state. Kansas City is primarily in Jackson County, founded during the 19th century. As part of part of Tornado Alley, it sits in the middle of a long stretch of land in the United States with a heavy risk of natural disasters during certain times of the year. This city has primarily has a humid continental climate, though some colder areas of the city fall into a humid subtropical zone. The official nickname of Kansas City – the City of Fountains – comes from the fountains at Kauffman Stadium.
Knoxville, Tennessee
Being the third largest city in Tennessee, Knoxville has a reputation for being safe and welcoming to anyone who wants an outdoor adventure. Aptly named “The Cradle of Country Music,” this city has welcomed some of the biggest names in country music history. It also earned the accolade of being one of the top 25 places to live in 2023, though it was the top place in the state.
Key West, Florida
Key West is both an island in Florida and a collection of islands named the City of Key West. It is 95 miles from Cuba, and it has a population of 26,444 people, as of the last census. Once the home of Ernest Hemingway and Robert Frost, this city has a notable history. It is also one of the few places to see where the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean meet.
Keystone Heights, Florida
Even though Keystone Heights is in Florida, it got its name from Pennsylvania’s nickname, which is the Keystone State. The name came from John J. Lawrence, a property developer who saw the area when he visited Florida in 1920, deciding to build their home there as the first home of the future city. It was incorporated in 1925.
Kernersville, North Carolina
Located in Forsyth County, Kernersville is one of the biggest towns on this list with 26,481 residents. Originally settled in 1756, this town offers many historical sites to visit like Körner’s Folly and the North Cherry Street Historic District. Incorporated in the 19th century, the first census only recorded 585 residents. Nowadays, it hosts an annual Honeybee Festival every fall.
Kokomo, Indiana
Kokomo’s history primarily started with the railroads, installing the first railroad stop in 1854. As natural gas thrived, it was the center of the Indiana Gas Boom in 1885, leading to the launch of the Diamond Plate Glass Company 2 years later. This stained glass company has remained in business in Kokomo for over 100 years now, setting a trend of new invention launches throughout its history, including the first aerial bomb (1918) and the first stainless steel tableware (1912).
Kingston, New York
Originally named the first capital of New York, Kingston currently has 24,069 residents. It is the main location of the O Festival, a local music festival hosted by a nonprofit organization during the summer. It is north of New York City, welcoming tourists within the Hudson Valley with riverside views. Spread through the year, this county has over 3 million tourists annually for boat cruises, railroad excursions, and many local museums.
