Though the exact origin of the Chinese zodiac is debated, it was first officially identified during the Han Dynasty. As the story goes, the notorious Jade Emperor — ruler of heaven and earth — decided it would be easier to measure time with a proper calendar. This calendar was called a zodiac, and from there, the iconic Chinese zodiac came to fruition! Fun Fact: The English word zodiac is derived from the Ancient Greek zōdiakòs kýklos. Translated literally, it means “circle (or cycle) of little animals.” How interesting!

Throughout the world, dragons have very different symbolic meanings. In Asian culture, dragons are seen as wholly benevolent creatures with great power.

In China, dragons are most commonly depicted as serpent-like creatures with horns, claws, and four legs. Otherwise called long or loong, the most impactful mythology involving this being is that of a famous Chinese water dragon that dwells in oceans, lakes, and rivers. It is also said to roam the sky, thanks to its great wings. In many stories, dragons were used as a sacred symbol by emperors. Today, people honor the long with vibrant festivals in hopes of increasing their good fortune for the coming year.

To continue, the dragon is the only mythical creature in the Chinese zodiac. The inclusion of this animal likely came down to how important they are in Chinese society. Unlike the more mischievous, malevolent symbolism of dragons in western culture, this creature is seen as a noble, wise being throughout many Asian countries. Because of this, the impact of the dragon in the Chinese zodiac is profound! Typically, it’s a year associated with great potential and the high possibility of success or achievement. Often associated with prosperity, vitality, and the overcoming of challenges, the dragon symbolizes power, endurance, and good fortune.
