In the distant late Shang Dynasty, the world was in chaos and the people were suffering.
There was an old man named Jiang Shang. People respectfully called him Tai Gong. Tai Gong had great ambitions. He was well-read in military books and understood the ways of governing a country. He wholeheartedly wanted to find a wise monarch to display his talents and save the common people.
Tai Gong came to the bank of the Wei River and fished here every day. But his fishing method was extremely peculiar. His fishhook was straight and three feet above the water surface. There was also no bait on the fishhook. People passing by saw Tai Gong fishing like this and all found it very strange. They all laughed at him: "Old man, how can you catch fish like this?" Tai Gong just smiled faintly and ignored them.
As days passed, Tai Gong still insisted on on his unique fishing method. Finally, one day, Ji Chang, the Marquis of the West, later known as King Wen of Zhou, went out hunting. When divining, the divination sign showed that what he would obtain in this hunting was neither a dragon nor a chi, neither a tiger nor a bear, but a teacher of kings who could assist him in achieving hegemony.
Ji Chang set off with doubts. When he came to the Wei River, he saw at a glance that gray-haired but extraordinary old man Tai Gong. Tai Gong was sitting there quietly, holding a fishing rod, with a leisurely demeanor. Ji Chang's heart stirred. He stepped forward and talked with Tai Gong. After a conversation, Ji Chang was pleasantly surprised to find that the old man in front of him was exactly the talented person he had been longing for.
So, Ji Chang respectfully invited Tai Gong to come out and help. Tai Gong readily agreed. From then on, he followed Ji Chang and offered him advice. Under Tai Gong's assistance, Ji Chang's power grew stronger day by day, laying a solid foundation for King Wu of Zhou to attack and overthrow Shang later.
And the idiom "Tai Gong fishing, those who are willing take the bait" has spread since then, which is used to metaphorize being willing to be deceived.
