用英語講中囯故事——The snipe and the clam fight, 鷸蜯相爭,漁翁得利
The snipe and the clam fight, and the fisherman benefits
It is often used to describe a fight between two parties, which results in a third party benefiting.
A clam was basking in the sun by the river. It opened its shell and enjoyed the warm sunshine.
At this time, a snipe flew over and found the open clam. It thought it was a great opportunity and used its long beak to peck at the clam meat.
The clam immediately closed its shell and clamped the snipe's long beak tightly. No matter how hard the snipe struggled, it couldn't pull out its beak.
The snipe and the clam started a tug-of-war. The snipe said: "If it doesn't rain today or tomorrow, there will be dead clams."
The clam was not to be outdone and responded: "If you don't let it go today or tomorrow, there will be dead snipes."
They were deadlocked like this, and no one was willing to give in.
Just then, a fisherman passed by and saw this scene. He easily caught the snipe and the clam together and took them home to enjoy the food.
The fight between the snipe and the clam eventually benefited the fisherman.
This story tells us that if the two parties in the fight only care about the immediate small benefits and refuse to give in to each other, the third party may benefit in the end, while they themselves gain nothing. In real life, when dealing with contradictions and conflicts, people should learn to compromise and make concessions to avoid both sides being hurt and let the "fisherman" benefit.
