用英語講故事|A Gentleman On The Beam 樑上君子
During the Eastern Han Dynasty, there was a man named Chen Shi, who was kind and benevolent. One year, there was a famine and the people were starving.
One night, a thief entered his house and hid on his beam. Chen Shi saw him in the dark. Then he got up and put on his clothes, called his children and grandchildren to get up, and seriously educated them, saying: "One must be diligent by oneself. The nature of an unkind person is not necessarily bad. It's just that they become like this when they get contaminated with bad habits."
The children and grandchildren asked: "Who is such a person?" Chen Shi pointed at the thief on the beam and said: "It's the gentleman on the beam." The thief was very surprised, jumped down by himself, and kowtowed to admit his guilt. Chen Shi slowly enlightened him, saying: "Judging from your appearance, you don't seem to be a bad person. You should reflect on yourself and do good deeds.
Chen Shi knew that he was very poor, so he gave him two bolts of silk. From then on, there were no more thieves in the entire county.
The gentleman on the beam refers to the one hiding on the beam, a term for a thief. Now, sometimes it also refers to those who are divorced from reality and the masses.
