The Fox's False Bravado
The original meaning is that the fox uses the power of the tiger to scare other animals, which is a metaphor for relying on the power of others to oppress people.
During the Warring States Period, there was a minister in the State of Chu named Zhao Xixu who was upright and trusted by King Xuan of Chu.
However, many ministers in the court tried to discredit Zhao Xixu because they were jealous of him, and even made King Xuan of Chu mistakenly believe that the reason why the northern countries were afraid of Zhao Xixu was because Zhao Xixu himself had a strong deterrent power.
In order to answer King Xuan of Chu's doubts, Minister Jiang Yi told a fable about a fox and a tiger.
In a dense forest, a tiger was looking for food.
Suddenly, it found a fox and quickly pounced on it to catch the fox.
Just as the tiger was about to enjoy this delicious meal, the fox spoke.
It cunningly said to the tiger: "Don't you dare to eat me! I was sent by the Emperor of Heaven to manage all beasts. If you eat me, you will disobey the Emperor of Heaven's order."
The tiger half believed and half doubted. Seeing this, the fox further said: "If you don't believe it, you can go to the forest with me to see if all beasts are afraid of me."
The tiger thought this was a good way to verify it, so he agreed to the fox's proposal.
So, the fox walked in front with a swagger, and the tiger followed behind half-believing and half-doubting.
When they entered the depths of the forest, many small animals were scared to flee when they saw the tiger.
Seeing this, the tiger thought that the small animals really ran away because they were afraid of the fox, so he believed the fox's words.
In fact, the small animals were not afraid of the fox, but the tiger following the fox.
This story tells us: Some people or things seem to have a strong background or power, but in fact they are just using the power of others to scare people. Once they lose their support, their true strength will be revealed.
