Rise up upon hearing the crow of a rooster and practise with the sword
Originated from "Book of Jin·Biography of Zu Ti", it tells the story of the self-motivation of Zu Ti, a general in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and his good friend Liu Kun.
Originally, it meant to rise up and dance with a sword when hearing the cock crow. Later, it was used to describe people who were determined to serve the country and rose up in time.
Zu Ti, courtesy name Shi Zhi, was from Qiu County, Fanyang (now Laishui County, Hebei). He was open-minded and generous since childhood, and he was not interested in money and liked chivalry. Later, he worked hard to read a lot of books and was familiar with the past and the present.
Liu Kun, courtesy name Yue Shi, was from Weichang, Zhongshan (now Wuji County, Hebei). He had great ambitions in his youth. He and Zu Ti were both "Chief Clerk of Sizhou". The two were like-minded and shared the ambition to serve the country.
In the late Western Jin Dynasty, the country was in turmoil and the north was invaded by foreign races. Zu Ti and Liu Kun were both ambitious people who were eager to serve the country and restore the glory of the Han Dynasty.
They were good friends and lived in the same dormitory.
One night, Zu Ti was awakened by the sound of a cock crowing. Thinking of the country's crisis, he said to Liu Kun: "This is not a bad sound."
It means that the crowing of a cock is not an ominous sign, but a reminder that they should get up and exercise to serve the country.
So Zu Ti proposed that the two get up and practice sword every time they heard the crowing of a cock, and Liu Kun readily agreed.
From then on, regardless of the cold or heat, Zu Ti and Liu Kun got up every day and practiced sword hard, never slacking off.
Their efforts were finally rewarded. Zu Ti later became an outstanding general, led the army to the north, and recovered a large area of lost land.
And Liu Kun was also known for his all-round talents in civil and military affairs, and became an important official in the Jin Dynasty.
This idiom was later used to describe a person with ambition, hard work, fearlessness of difficulties, and perseverance.
This story inspires future generations and tells us that as long as we have determination and perseverance, no matter how difficult the environment is, we can overcome difficulties and realize our ideals.
