用英語講故事| Calling a Deer a Horse指鹿為馬
In the late Qin Dynasty, after Emperor Qin Shi Huang died of illness, his son Hu Hai succeeded to the throne as the Second Emperor of Qin, and the prime minister Zhao Gao held the power of the government.
Even though he held the position of prime minister, Zhao Gao was still not satisfied and he wanted to usurp the throne. Because he was afraid that some of the officials would not obey him, he came up with an idea.
One day when going to court, he led a sika deer and presented it to the Second Emperor of Qin, saying, "Your Majesty, this is a thousand-li horse that I present to you." The Second Emperor of Qin looked at it again and again and laughed loudly, "Prime Minister, you are mistaken. This is clearly a deer. How can you say it is a horse?"
Zhao Gao said, "This is indeed a horse. How can Your Majesty say it is a deer?" Zhao Gao then asked all the officials to judge. Telling the truth would offend the prime minister, and telling lies would be afraid of deceiving Your Majesty. Some were afraid of Zhao Gao's power and dared not speak. Some, in order to please Zhao Gao, said, "The prime minister is right. This is a horse." Some were realistic and said, "It is a deer, not a horse!"
Through this test, Zhao Gao distinguished which officials were loyal to him and which were disobedient. Later, all the affairs of the government were completely controlled by Zhao Gao. Zhao Gao secretly killed or expelled from the court those who told the truth, and sent someone to kill the Second Emperor of Qin, occupied the entire court, and eventually led to the downfall of the Qin Dynasty.
This idiom means pointing to a deer and saying it's a horse. It is used as a metaphor for deliberately confounding right and wrong and reversing black and white.
