Don't Talk About Ice With Summer Insects》
A long time ago, Confucius's disciple Zigong was cleaning the courtyard.
At this time, a passerby passed by and asked Zigong: "How many seasons are there in a year?" Zigong answered without hesitation: "There are four seasons in a year, spring, summer, autumn and winter."
However, the passerby insisted that there are only three seasons in a year. The two argued endlessly, and their voices became louder and louder. Finally, they decided to go to Confucius for judgment.
After hearing their argument, Confucius looked at the passerby and said calmly: "There are three seasons in a year." Zigong was full of doubts, but he didn't dare to refute his teacher. The passerby walked away triumphantly.
After the passerby left, Zigong couldn't help asking Confucius: "Teacher, there are obviously four seasons in a year, why do you say there are only three seasons?"
Confucius smiled and said: "Look at that man, he is green all over, he is a grasshopper. Grasshoppers are born in spring and die in autumn, they only experience three seasons in their life, and have never seen winter.
Your argument with him about how many seasons there are in a year is like talking about ice and snow with summer insects. Summer insects can't talk about ice, what's the point of arguing with him?"
Zigong suddenly realized it. From then on, he remembered this truth and didn't argue with people whose cognition was limited to a specific range, just like not talking about ice with a "summer insect" that has only seen three seasons.
