Black Bear Sighting
The TikTok video shown just above was shared by the For Smiles TikTok page. This channel shares a variety of videos that are purely shared to make us smile. And this one shown above surely accomplishes its purpose. We are assuming this video takes place in Texas due to some of the comments that were provided.
Black Bear Vs. Little Girl
At the start of this video, we see a black bear that is approaching this house. And we quickly hear the sounds of a little child. The camera pans, and we are able to see that she is standing on the front porch with her parents. Where we might at first be fearful of this little girl being hurt, we quickly hear what she says.
“Can I pet that dawg?” And she steps towards the edge of the front porch. Her mother quickly grabs her arm and says no, and we see her dad filming stepping forward and saying, “No!” The little girl persists, holding her hand out “Can I pet that dawg?” Her parents reply again, “No!” She decides to hold out her word because, apparently, her parents are not understanding “Can I pet that dawggg?” Her mother patiently replies, “No.” And she tries one more time “Can I pet that dawggggg?”
If you’re laughing as hard as we are, you might just need to rewatch the video clip.
How Many Black Bears Are There?
Black bears (Ursus americanus) can be found in places all over North America. And yes, they can be found in Texas, too. It is estimated that only about 30-40 black bears live there, however. Overall, their population is only about 800,000, so their conservation status is of the least concern.
What is the Meaning of Conservation Status?
When you hear about animal populations, you will often hear things about their conservation status. Well, a conservation status is defined as “It is a worldwide conservation status listing and ranking system. It divides species into nine categories, of which the official term ‘threatened is a subset of three categories: Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable:”
- Extinct (EX)
- Extinct in the Wild (EW)
- Critically Endangered (CR)
- Endangered (EN)
- Vulnerable (VU)
- Near Threatened (NT)
- Least Concern (LC)
- Data Deficient (DD)
- Not Evaluated (NE)
So, in this particular instance, the black bear population is of the least concern. This means that they are repopulating, and their species are not in danger of extinction.
