Black Bear Sighting in Connecticut
Last Wednesday, October 11, 2023, a large black bear was sighted entering a neighborhood home in Berkhamsted, Connecticut. This bear went a step further than this neighborhood. He decided to check out one of the houses. This bear was clearly hungry because he arrived at the house right around noon, it was reported. Perhaps he was just replying to an invitation for lunch.
When he arrived at the home, he was able to get inside, and the security camera footage shows this massive bear just standing in the living room. Notice how he doesn’t cause a ruckus in any way. Clearly he was there for one thing only. And that can’t be found in a living room.
At 14 seconds, we see the bear walking right to the kitchen. It’s almost as if he knew exactly where to go in the house for food! Also, notice how he doesn’t waste any time; he goes right up to the freezer and actually pulls the door open.
At first, it was thought that the bear grabbed some chicken; however, it was later reported that it was actually some lasagna! And then, seemingly without a care in the world, this bear sees the window is open, and he just hops right through it and trots off the porch. Clearly, he wasn’t interested in sitting at the dining room table to eat; he was looking for a place much more comfortable.
How Many Black Bears Live in Connecticut?

The black bear, often referred to as the North American black bear (Ursus americanus), is of the family Ursidae. As you might assume, yes, they can be found throughout North America.
According to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, “Incredibly adaptable, black bears occupy a greater range of habitats than any bear in the world. Bear home ranges must include food, water, cover, denning sites, and diverse habitat types.”
They also estimated there to be some 900,000 left in the black bear population. And Connecticut’s Official State Website clarifies that of that 900,000, there are estimated to be 1,000-1,200 black bears in Connecticut alone.
So, we guess that it could be easily said seeing a black bear in the state of Connecticut is not usual. And it’s even more rare to see one inside your house!
