At the start of this video, we see thousands of fish all swimming together in a school like formation. Just up ahead, we see a few divers who are filming all the beautiful sea life that they see here in Ecuador.
Suddenly, like something we see out of a Sci-Fi film, we see the fish all part right down the middle. And in between this parting, we see a massive whale shark coming between them. It’s as if these fish knew that this whale shark’s presence was close by. And out of respect for this creature that is over 100 times bigger than they are, they all move out of the way.
What is incredible is that just a few feet from this massive whale shark are two divers who are filming this amazing creature. It is difficult to put into words just how massive this animal is. No amount of words that we can use would come close to what these divers experienced being so close they could touch it.
We are able to see amazing footage of this whale shark underneath, which gives us an appreciation for the size of this animal.
How Big is the Whale Shark?
As we said above, the whale shark is one of the largest animals in the entire world! The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) of the family Rhincodontidae is an extremely impressive creature that weighs anywhere from 15-20 tons (30,000-40,000 pounds). To match this size, they can also grow to be anywhere from 40-60 feet in length.
As we can imagine, these whale sharks can eat quite a ton. Pun was definitely intended there. But it’s more like they eat 46 pounds of plankton daily!
