Virginia has about sixty-four public airports, with six being international. Airports in each state bring something unique, making traveling worth it. The bigger the airport, the more likelihood that the airport offers a large number of shops and airlines. #1 Washington Dulles International Airport

The Washington Dulles International Airport location is in Duller, Virginia. The airport is on 12,000 acres of land and was the first to accommodate commercial jets. To showcase the size of the Washington Dulles International Airport, it has 113 airline gates and can hold 24,000 parked vehicles. The longest runway here is 11,500 feet. The airport’s name came from John Foster Dulles, a U.S. secretary of state from 1953 to 1959. The airport opened in 1962 and had over 52,000 travelers in the first year of operation! While waiting for your flight, there are many shops to scroll around. Don’t forget to stop at a food shop for a quick meal!

#2 Newport News/Williamsburg Airport

The Newport News/Williamsburg Airport was built after World War ll on the United States Army’s camp, Patrick Henry site. The land this airport sits on was the embarkation port for soldiers sent to North Africa, Europe, and New Guinea. The airport is on 1800 acres of land and the longest runway is 8,003 feet. The airlines utilized here are American, Delta, Virgin Atlantic, KLM, Aeromexico, Air France, and United Korean Air.

#3 Norfolk International Airport

Norfolk International Airport serves coastal Virginia and the outer banks of North Carolina. This airport is situated on 1300 acres of land and opened in 1938. The current airlines served here are Allegiant, American, Breeze, Delta, Spirit, Frontier, Southwest, and United. With only two terminals, this airport serves many passengers a day.

#4 Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport

The Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is on 850 acres of land and has 58 gates. In 1941, when the airport opened, it was only 2.5 acres. Half an acre was then added in November of 1950. Within the first year of opening, over 300,00 people were served! The airport has three runways, with the longest one reaching 7,169 feet. There are over 100 food concessions and stores to choose from. Located in Arlington, Virginia, the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport has 8 airlines with 98 destinations.

#5 Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport

The Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport is located three miles northwest of Roanoke, Virginia. The airport is on 912 acres of land and has about 116 flights coming in and out of the airport daily. Delta, American, and United Airlines are utilized at this airport. The airport’s longest runway is 6,800b feet.

#6 Charlottesville-Albermarle

Charlottesville-Albermarle is eight miles north of Charlottesville, Virginia. Service began here in 1955 because of the Piedmont airlines. On 710 acres of land, this airport has about sixty flights daily! The longest runway here is 6,801 feet.
