This Hippo Is Not Too Happy These Tourists Are On The Water

Do you know those terrifying movies we watch where the music starts to build in an eerie way? And you just know that something is about to pop up suddenly. Typically we would imagine a shark, an alien, or some other horrific creature ready to tear us apart.

Well, these tourists in the video posted above got a dose of this eerie feeling when an angry hippo jumped up above the surface of the water. Don’t miss the action above!

Angry Hippo Sighting In River

The short YouTube video clip shown at the top of this blog post takes us to the river, where some tourists are touring and stumble on an angry hippo. The CNN News 18 YouTube page saw this viral video and shared it on their news station. It has received close to 10,000 views. This news channel regularly shares footage of entertainment, wildlife, politics, and anything else that might catch the public eye.

Furious Hippo Charges At Tourist Safari

As the video starts out above, we see this safari group is doing a river tour. What better way to see the animals in the wild than by going along the water where animals come to bathe, congregate, cool off, and find prey?

However, this hippo is not too happy. This was not simply a place where he came to drink water or cool off. This is his territory, and these guests are not welcome here. According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, “Hippos are known for fiercely protecting their territories and will react aggressively to humans entering their space. This poses a great risk to humans who may unknowingly enter hippo territory by boat or on land.”

As the boat speeds through his territory, the male hippo leaps up and lunges at the boat. His ability to power through the water was terrifying for these tourists. And had it not been for the tour guides getting them out safely, this could have ended very differently.

Do Hippos Kill People?

The short and sweet answer is yes, hippos are very capable of killing people. Not only that but there are stories of hippos killing people who got too close. The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is not an animal to be trifled with. This 10,000-pound beast has the ability to crush his opponents not only with his weight but also with his enormous mouth.

Discover Wildlife estimates that hippos cause approximately “500 deaths annually (as compared to only 22 for lions), hippos are deadly land mammals.” Lucky for these tourists they were not on a self-guided tour. Word to the wise, if you’re going on a safari, don’t go straight into hippo territory!
