Lynn and his wife have a YouTube page called the Deer Whisperer Lynn Smith channel. Here they share various videos of Lynn feeding deer. We will discuss more on whether it’s safe to feed deer below. So, stay tuned!
Herd of Deer Looking For Food
As the video above starts out, we see that Lynn is in his garage. He turns around, and staring him in the face are two deer that have fully entered his garage. Directly behind them are dozens of deer that have gathered together.
As Lynn walks out of the garage we are truly amazed by how many deer there are. He grabs a cup of seed and throws it out on the pavement for the deer to come to eat. They knew this man would provide them with food, which is why they came.
Is It Safe To Feed Deer?
Most places that you look at in regards to feeding animals will give a resounding No, it’s not good to feed wild animals. And deer are no different. North Carolina Wildlife warns that “Supplemental feeding of wild deer is harmful and can lead to bouts of severe diarrhea and dehydration, which could be deadly.” Supplemental feeding is when an animal is given extra food beyond what they need and currently eat.
This guy in the video above has great intentions. He clearly has a love for wildlife and has built a bond with him where they know he is safe to be around and can come to him when they are in need. However, they are coming to him out of a dependence on food. Should this couple ever move, these deer could very well be at a loss as to how to get that extra food they had been coming to rely upon.
Deer (Odocoileus virginiana) are herbivore eaters. They will eat things such as acorns, fruits, grass, mushrooms, and herbs. They can eat anywhere from 6-8 percent of their body weight. Their weight fluctuates depending on species, but they can weigh anywhere from 22-990 pounds. So, as we can imagine, deer can eat a lot!
