2. Rutland-Southern Vermont Regional Airport (RUT)
Located five miles south of Rutland, Rutland-Southern Vermont Regional Airport (RUT) is the state’s second-busiest airport. It saw 4,531 passengers in 2021, a 117% increase from 2020 when the airport had 2,085 passengers. Cape Air is the only commercial airline that operates out of RUT with three flights each day to Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts.
RUT is mostly utilized by people piloting small, private aircraft. The airport provides an important hub for local pilots to connect with services and community. Chapter 968 of the Experimental Aircraft Association operates out of RUT. This organization hosts two annual fly-in events as well as events for young people.
Green Mountain Flight Training is located at RUT, offering flight instruction with three different aircraft: a Piper Warrior, a Cesna 172, and a Piper Aztec. In addition, SD Air Service is located at RUT and provides aircraft repair and inspection services. The airport’s Hangar Cafe is a popular spot for breakfast and lunch thanks to its clear views of the runway.

The busiest airport in Vermont is Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport (Leahy BTV), which saw 382,744 boarding passengers in 2021. This was an increase of 91% from 2020, when the airport saw 200,182 boarding passengers. While the airport has seen significant growth, it is dwarfed by airports like Hartsfield Jackson International in Atlanta, which sees around 300,000 passengers each day.
Five commercial airlines operate out of Leahy BTV, offering non-stop flights to at least 10 major U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Miami, and Dallas. The airport terminal includes restaurants and shops in addition to nursing pods, a play area for kids, and a space for yoga. In 2023, Leahy BTV was named one of the country’s 10 best small airports by USA Today.
