Xu Haifeng showed a strong interest and talent in shooting since childhood. When Xu Haifeng was 22 years old, he was a fertilizer salesman in a supply and marketing cooperative. Later, he practiced shooting with his middle school PE teacher and won the championship of Anhui Province. In 1982, he joined the Anhui Provincial Shooting Team and officially started his sports career.

Twenty years later, when reporters asked him how he felt about being the first athlete to win a gold medal, Xu Haifeng believed that he was the first Chinese athlete to win an Olympic gold medal only because the shooting event was held earlier and he could have this reputation. Two months after the Los Angeles Olympics, Xu Haifeng decided to donate his gold medal to the country, which is now displayed in the National Museum of China. Regarding this, he said, "My success stems from the strength of the country."
