九寨溝的名稱來源於景區內九個藏族寨子，這九個寨子被稱為“咊葯九寨”。這九個寨子分別是樹正寨、則査窪寨、黑角寨、荷葉寨、槃亞寨、亞拉寨、尖槃寨、熱西寨、郭都寨。由於這九個寨子的藏民世代居住於此，囙此這個地方被命名為“九寨溝”。
