Watch This Gladiator Crocodile Get Its Foot Bite Off and Keep on Moving
There are few animal videos that truly take us by surprise here at A-Z- Animals. Our whole team of writers probably views hundreds, if not thousands, of videos per day. And we regularly see videos that are very similar. Lions chasing antelopes. Hyenas stealing someone else’s kill. Predatorial animals are fighting each other.
However, we are big advocates, for you can’t predict animals! While we study and research them and are able to know a lot about them, we never truly know everything they are capable of. So, this video was a first for us. Watch it below!
Viewer discretion is advised: The video contains graphic footage of an animal being maimed. Video may not be suitable for young viewers or for those sensitive to animal violence.
Crocodile Vs. Gladiator Crocodile
At the start of this wild clip, we see this takes place at a type of crocodile sanctuary of some kind. There are over a dozen crocodiles on this shoreline. We hear the sounds of people that are lining the boardwalk; they are here to see this crocodile caretaker feed these wild reptiles.
The caretaker takes a large chunk of meat that he had prepared for these crocodiles and is getting ready to throw it. We see all the crocs getting ready because the dinner bell just rang for them. He throws it, and we see a frenzy happen as each crocodile quickly tries to get over to the meat.
If we look in the bottom left-hand side of the screen, we see a crocodile that is trying to get over as quickly as possible. And when he does, we see that he accidentally steps into another crocodile’s mouth that was open. This gladiator of a crocodile was not happy with this. At nine seconds, we see him hold the other crocs leg high up in the air, and then he proceeds to do a death roll!
This death roll consisted of him rolling around, and we actually heard the sound of this crocodile’s foot getting bit off!
What is a Crocodile Death Roll?
This isn’t just something we came up with, in case you thought that it was. This is an actual term that we use for crocodiles because of how much they do this. The National Institute of Health describes this death roll as the following.
“Crocodilians, including the alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), perform a spinning maneuver to subdue and dismember prey. The spinning maneuver, which is referred to as the ;death roll’, involves rapid rotation about the longitudinal axis of the body.”
This is most famous for their ability to grab an animal that is trying to cross. For example, during the Great Wildebeest Migration, a Nile crocodile would grab a wildebeest and perform a death roll to drown and kill the animal.
