The Top 13 Most Dangerous Bridges in the World Are Not for the Faint of Heart
Humans have expanded broadly throughout many lands. To connect with each other, they built roads. Sometimes, the landscapes called for humans to connect two places with a bridge. That bridge can be a pedestrian or vehicle bridge that can cross over a body of water or a valley. Bridges can also traverse along mountains to a particular destination. Humans have managed incredible feats, but sometimes the bridges they’ve built are scary and dangerous. Let’s take a look at the top 13 most dangerous bridges in the world.
Mackinac Island Ice Bridge, Michigan
The bridge is so dangerous that the Mackinac Bridge Authority even provides crossing services to people — they will cross your car or motorcycle across the bridge for a fee. The Mackinac Island Ice Bridge faces high, drastic winds when you cross between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. The bridge is five miles long and stands 155 feet above water.
Royal Gorge Bridge, Colorado
Located above the Arkansas River in Colorado, the Royal Gorge Bridge is a whopping 955 above the river and it’s 1,260 feet long. That’s a long way to drive and if you are scared of heights, it also won’t be an easy feat. It was finished in 1929, but it wasn’t until 1982 that stabilizing wind cables were added to make it more secure.
Eshima Ohashi Bridge, Japan
The bridge has a gradient of 6.1% on one side and 5.1% on the other side, but it seems as if it’s a steep incline on both sides due to the pictures taken. It is steep to make way for ships across the lake, but it isn’t as steep as one would think. The bridge is nicknamed the “Rollercoaster Bridge.”
Quepos Bridge, Costa Rica
Located on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, the bridge was built in the 1930s as a railway bridge. It is now used for vehicles all the time, even though the bridge shakes vigorously when vehicles pass.
Vitim River Bridge, Siberia
The bridge was originally a railway bridge built 50 feet above the Vitim River. It is 1,870 feet long and only 6 feet wide, which means cars can barely cross. Moreover, the bridge is made of wood, which is rotting away and sometimes the bridge is covered in ice, making it more dangerous for crossers.
Puente de Ojuela, México
This Mexican bridge located in Durango is the way to visit a ghost town called Ojuela. The bridge is 1,030 feet long and it’s 327 feet above a gorge. Ojuela used to be a mining town and the bridge was built during the mining boom in the 19th century. Moreover, the bridge is made of wood, which sways and makes scary, squeaking sounds, and is held by steel cables.
Hussaini Hanging Bridge, Pakistan
The footbridge is scary just by looking at it. All it is is wooden planks being held together by cables. Furthermore, it crosses the Hunza River and right next to it is the previous bridge in tatters. The Hussaini Hanging Bridge is 600 feet long and 100 feet above the river.
Deception Pass Bridge, Washington
You can drive across or walk across, but either or, you will feel as if you’re sucked into a foggy terrain once you go through the bridge. Furthermore, the bridge connects Whidbey Island with Fidalgo Island and is 1,486 feet long and 180 feet above the water.
Aiguille du Midi Bridge, France
The pedestrian bridge located in the French Alps is a whopping 9,209 feet above ground, so whatever you do, don’t look down. It’s a short cross, but to get to the bridge, you have to take a cable car to go upwards.
The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge, Randa, Switzerland
Located in the Swiss Alps, the bridge is 1,640 feet long and 278 feet above a valley. Usually, this bridge is crossed because of a journey many hikers take to get to the Matterhorn. The bridge can be crossed, but the official website cautions pedestrians that they will be able to see through the bridge when crossing.
Capilano Suspension Bridge, Canada
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia, the Capilano Suspension Bridge crosses the Capilano River. It is a pedestrian bridge that is surrounded by forests. Furthermore, when you cross it, it shakes like crazy and it feels like you will plummet to your death. The bridge is 450 feet long and 230 feet above the river.
Canopy Walk, Ghana
The pedestrian bridge is 1,080 feet long and 130 feet above the ground. Furthermore, the Canopy Walk is a brisk walk along a wooden bridge. The good thing is there is netting that covers the bridge and handrails, too.
Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge, Northern Ireland
The 66-foot-long bridge is 98 feet above the water and was built by fishermen in 1755. People are scared to cross the bridge and even if they do, many go back to the mainland by boat. The good news is only one person has fallen from the bridge (and he survived).
Conclusion
And there you have it, these are the top 13 most dangerous bridges in the world. If you happen to cross the bridge by car or by foot, you may experience some palms sweating and intense nerves. Just don’t look down and be brave. If you make it across, congratulations!
