The Scariest Bridge in New York Is Not for the Faint of Heart
Have you ever been on a bridge and thought to yourself that this may be one of the scariest experiences that you have ever encountered? You’re not alone. There are plenty of people out there who are terrified of driving or walking across bridges. And for good reason. There are a lot of bridges in the world that are quite terrifying. When it comes to New York, there’s one particular bridge that happens to be the scariest in the state. Let’s take a look at the scariest bridge in New York, which is not for the faint of heart.
Location of the Bridge
The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is the scariest bridge in New York. The suspension bridge is located between Staten Island and Brooklyn, which are two of the five boroughs in New York City. Moreover, the span of the bridge goes over the Narrows. The Narrows is a body of water that connects the New York Harbor with the Atlantic Ocean and the Lower New York Bay.
About the Bridge
The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge Spans 13 lanes over to decks. The bridge is 13,700 feet in length, however, the longest span is 4,260 feet. The bridge also has a clearance of 228 feet from the water, which means it is at a high altitude. It was named after the first European explorer who came into New York Harbor Giovanni Verrazzano.
The idea of the bridge started in the 1920s, but skirmishes and other problems delayed the construction of the bridge until 1959. The bridge opened on November 21, 1964, and a lower deck was added in 1969 to alleviate traffic. Furthermore, in 2014, the local government started reconstruction of the bridge, a feat that cost $1.5 billion. One of the reasons why it’s so scary is that the bridge was designed to sway during high winds. It has been said that even truckers are afraid of crossing the bridge sometimes.
Wildlife in the Surrounding Area
There are various places to see the bridge, which includes parks. In those parks, some animals roam around freely. Those include squirrels and other rodents. But because the bridge crosses New York Harbor, there are boundless marine animals on the shores of either side of the bridge, as well as in the depths of the harbor. You can spot whales (including humpback whales feeding), dolphins, harbor seals, and porpoises swimming about. There are also countless fish, invertebrates, and other sea creatures.
Conclusion
And there you have it, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is the scariest bridge in New York. And it’s not for the faint of heart. The bridge connects Brooklyn to Staten Island and it’s also one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. It’s also a double-deck bridge, which makes it even scarier for those that are on top. If you are scared of heights and ever visit New York and have the opportunity to cross the bridge, just don’t look down!
