Nature lovers flock to Charleston because of the abundant outdoor opportunities it offers. Surrounded by striking natural vistas, the extensive network of trails gives hikers, bicyclists, and horseback riders endless possibilities. The Kanawha State Forest includes 9,300 acres of wildlife and beautiful scenery.

In addition to its spectacular natural beauty, Charleston provides historical charm. A key historical attraction is the West Virginia State Capitol, built in 1863. It was moved from its original location in Wheeling to Charleston in 1870, back to Wheeling in 1875, and finally back to Charleston in 1885 where it remains. The East End District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is yet another part of the city’s allure.

Over half of West Virginia’s residents live in rural areas, making it the third most rural state in the country. Therefore, with the migration from more urban areas into smaller, rural areas, the state has opportunities for growth. As it stands, though, most of its cities are seeing declining population growth rates.

Charleston and the second-largest city, Huntington, have similar populations. However, the annual population growth rate is greater in Charleston, creating a larger population decline at a faster rate. By 2029, Charleston’s predicted population is 42.9 thousand, while Huntington’s is 42.3 thousand. By 2050, Huntington’s population will be larger than Charleston’s, making it the predicted largest city in West Virginia 2050.
