用英语讲中国故事——The Blessing in Disguise 塞翁失马
The Blessing in Disguise
It is about an old man at the border who lost a horse (Sai Weng: an old man who lived in a dangerous place on the border), and later the horse came back with another horse; it is a metaphor that although he suffered a temporary loss, he might get benefits from it, and bad things can turn into good things under certain conditions
In a dangerous place on the border, there lived an old man named Sai Weng.
He was good at predicting good and bad luck, and had many horses at home.
One day, a horse from Sai Weng's family ran into the herd of horses of the Hu people for no reason. The neighbors came to comfort him and thought it was a great loss.
However, Sai Weng smiled and said, "How can this not be a blessing?"
After a few months, the lost horse not only came back by itself, but also brought back a Hu horse.
The neighbors came to congratulate him again, thinking that Sai Weng was really lucky and got an extra horse.
But Sai Weng said worriedly, "How can this not be a disaster?"
Sai Weng had many good horses at home, and his son also liked riding horses very much.
One day, his son rode on the Hu horse, but accidentally fell off the horse and broke his leg.
The neighbors came to comfort him again, but Sai Weng thought it might not be a bad thing.
A year later, the Huns invaded the border fortress in large numbers. All strong men were conscripted into the army, and many died in the war.
But Sai Weng's son was exempted from conscription because of his broken leg, thus saving his life. In the end, both father and son were safe and sound.
This story tells us that the good and bad of things are not absolute. Sometimes seemingly unfortunate things may bring unexpected good results; and seemingly lucky things may also hide crises. It emphasizes that when facing gains and losses in life, we should remain calm and rational, not be confused by superficial phenomena, but see the multi-faceted and complex nature of things.
