用英語講中囯傳統故事——A thousand miles to send swan feathers 韆裏送鵝毛
During the Tang Dynasty, the Uyghur Khaganate to show their goodwill, sent an envoy named Mian Bogao, bearing rare and precious treasures to pay tribute.
Among these tribute items, the most valuable was a rare white swan.
Its pure white feathers resembled the blooming snow lotus, beautiful and sacred.
Mian Bogao's greatest concern was this swan. If anything happened, he wouldn't be able to account for it to the rulers of both countries.
Therefore, throughout the journey, he personally fed it water and food, never taking his eyes off the swan.
One day, they passed by a lake. The swan stretched its neck and opened its beak, panting heavily.
Mian Bogao couldn't bear to see it suffer, so he opened the cage and brought the swan to the lake to drink to its heart's content.
Unexpectedly, after drinking its fill, the swan gathered its strength and flew into the sky!
Mian Bogao lunged forward, only to catch a few feathers, watching helplessly as the swan flew farther and farther away.
Having lost such a precious tribute, he was sure he wouldn't survive.
After much thought, Mian Bogao decided to continue his journey to the Tang Empire.
He took out a piece of pure white silk and carefully wrapped the feathers.
Then, he wrote a poem on the silk:
"A swan as tribute to the Tang,
mountains high and roads long.
At Lake Mianyang the treasure is lost,
but Uyghur's sentiment remains strong.
To the Tang Emperor, Mian Bogao begs forgiveness.
Though the gift is light, the sentiment is profound.
A thousand miles to send swan feathers!"
Mianbogao arrived in Chang'an with jewels and goose feathers.
The emperor, upon seeing the feathers was initially a bit angry.
But after reading the poem and hearing Mian Bogao's account, he felt that Mian Bogao was loyal and honest, not failing in his mission, and thus rewarded him generously.
From then on, "A thousand miles to send swan feathers, the gift may be light but the sentiment is deep," became a saying to illustrate that the value of a gift lies in the sentiment behind it, rather than the gift itself.
